Here's a wee blurby type thing to give you a more fleshed out idea of what we hope the cafe might help to achieve within the community.
From Me to Thee…I sat and stared at a blank page in my brain
Overwhelmed by the pressure to try to explain
My vision for this café, my hope it can bind
Together the groups who are seeking to find
A sustainable future for our people and planet
A seeming sinking ship, but they’re determined to man it
Keen to bail out the bilge, patch up the holes
Shining suns through the smog clouding our souls
So what can I add, what can I bring to the party
Besides questionable rhymes, quite arty and farty
I’m not perfect, can’t be all things to all people
I can only be myself, hoping that each’ll
Embrace my strengths, instead of my obvious flaws
Trusting that at heart I’m down for the cause
…For as I pause to consider the next few lines
I cannot ignore what’s springing to mind –
That these words are a plea, but nothing hand and cap
Rather I ask for your advice on bridging a gap
For my Heart lives at number 10 Transition Towns
And its love for Canalside and Gaia will never die down
My frown is flipped by Pete Skip and the folk of 21 Actions
And by whoever’s defacing the smug campaigning captions
But across the tracks I interact in a different world
Where 11 year old boys rape 9 year old girls
Where abuse is hurled and violence is cool
And the brightest kids are excluded from school
Welcome to the youth of the grime generation
They don’t give a fuck about the planet, or who’s running our nation
Cos they’re facing a life where they’re virtually voiceless
And their future’s choices are both equally pointless
Sell drugs…or kill people – the paths they’re presented
Is it any surprise old farts like us are resented?
Well now both spleen and dream it seems I have vented
And until the two are married I’ll not rest contented
So I’m sending this out to ask for your views
On how my evening café perhaps can be used
As a glue…a hub to bring two worlds together
Before the ties that bind us are irreparably severed
Dearest SoulMate,The above is what poured out when the ice broke. I had been beating myself up ever since waking this morning, as I tried to formulate an email ‘blurb’ I could send round to the likes of Transition Towns, Canalside, Gaia etc. I wasn’t really expecting it to come out like that, but after a while I got so pi**ed off with trying to write something, I just gave up and let whatever wanted to come out come out.
What follows is an outline of the way I hope to bring the various community groups I am aware of to greater public awareness through what I do at the café. I always aim for a win-win situation, so it is my hope that if I promote the fantastic work you are all doing, you might in turn support me by spreading the word about what I am trying to do, and will come and share a pancake from time to time.
I am not embarking on this venture to make vast sums of money. I hope to make enough from this venture to put food on the table and clothes on the back of my fiancé and I…and also to make a little to put towards helping some of the young musicians I work with to make albums and get merchandise etc printed up, so they can start themselves on the path to self-sufficiency through their creative talents, instead of having to sell drugs or join the army to make a living.
The Café…Beginning on Wednesday 5th May
Will be open 4 evenings a week from 5pm – 10pm.
The 4 evenings will be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
The Magic Pan will be based at Zeb’s Café, which is on the high st in Leamington spa
It will initially be vegetarian…though if, in time, the customers would like to see this policy change, it may do. I am acutely aware, however, that there are numerous places one can buy meaty food in the area, and very few places where one can buy dedicated and creative vegetarian food.
My aim is to provide for a variety of different needs/desires. The list below should give you an idea of what I’m aiming at:
· A Vegetarian/Vegan/Celiac who is looking for a place to eat out that is good value and supports local producers
· Anyone who wants somewhere to meet a friend after work/lectures for a bite to eat, but does not want the prices or formality of a restaurant
· A family with kids, who would like somewhere they can go as a family treat/outing that is not McDonalds/TGI Friday’s, but that can provide child friendly food and prices
· Anyone who loves pancakes and/or freshly made Chai and/or would be glad to find an establishment who are passionate about their food and customers….somewhere each person is treated as an amazing individual instead of potential numbers in a bank account
Interactivity…It is my intention that whilst I will be the chef and seed of the café, its customers will over time prove to be the soil and sunlight to guide its direction of growth.
I’ve set up all the necessary Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube presence etc. Weekly I will be adding videos, poems and music to these sites for all to share. I invite you to do the same. If you have suggestions for events, actions, meetings etc, I hope that The Magic Pan can become a vital resource in publicising and energising positive community undertakings. It is my hope that the café can become the hub for local action…and that its online community can be the point from which we can disseminate our ideas to the rest of our global family…Act Local, Think Global…Eat Pancakes. Simple. J
Suppliers and the Community…My pledge is to source all my ingredients from within 20 miles of Leamington and to use organic produce wherever I can. The only Supermarket I will use will be the Co-Op on Brunswick St, and this only when absolutely necessary.
The bulk of the veg that I use in the café will be sourced from Canalside Community Foods – a community agriculture project based in Radford Semele. Excitingly, they will also be supplying the wheat I use for the traditional pancakes and chapattis I will be making. Other fruit and veg – especially strawberries when in season – will come from Green Team Organic Food based in Moreton Morrell.
Gaia Wholefoods will be my source for many essential items such as Organic Lemon Juice and Sugar, and the various ingredients needed to make delicious GF/vegan versions of all the items on the menu.
Laura Hamilton, Chef-Proprietor of Queans Restaurant will be supplying the café with two out of the sixteen flavours of her fantastic homemade ice cream. We will begin with Bailey’s n’ Fudge and Hazelnut n’ Chocolate Praline…but ultimately the customers will decide which flavours remain flavour of the month
TakeAway…
We will be offering two kinds of takeaway service:
· Traditional – where you come and get a pancake or a portion of our dish of the day…and take it away somewhere before eating it.
· The Tuppaware Tiffin Takeaway – is where you make life easy (and tasty) for yourself. In keeping with our sustainable ethos, which tries to limit packaging as much as possible, you bring along a suitable tuppaware type container, and we will fill it with our dish of the day…perfect to eat that night, or perhaps to take with you at the end of your meal and enjoy reheated for lunch/dinner the following day.
You can book a table by ringing/emailing. If you have any questions, suggestion, or would like to help spread the word, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you one and all for taking a moment to read this. I hope to see you soon, and look forward to all and any ideas and feedback you may have.
Huge love.
George. xx
